E-juice, vape juice and e-liquid

E-juice is a liquid used in refillable e-cigarettes and vape devices. It is also called vape juice, e-liquid or vape liquid. E-juice typically consists of propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG) and flavorings, and may contain nicotine or be nicotine‑free.

E-juice is available in various formats, flavors and compositions. The type that is relevant depends, among other things, on the desired nicotine strength, volume and which e‑cigarette or vape device the liquid will be used in.

Types
Nicotine salt, freebase, shortfill and longfill
Nicotine strength
0–20 mg/ml
Bottle with nicotine
Up to 10 ml
Shortfill and longfill

Content
PG, VG and flavorings
Flavors
Fruit, berries, menthol, tobacco, dessert and candy

Different types of e-juice

E-juice is available in several types that differ in volume, nicotine content and intended use. The range includes nicotine salt, 10 ml e-juice, shortfill and longfill, and for those who mix themselves also nicotine shots, base liquid and flavor additives.

Nicotine salt or freebase?

Nicotine salt is e-juice where the nicotine occurs in salt form. 10 ml e-juice is ready‑made e‑liquid in smaller bottles, with freebase nicotine or without nicotine. Both are ready to use. Nicotine strength and PG/VG ratio are indicated on each product.

Nicotine salt 10 ml freebase
Nicotine form Nicotine combined with an acid Nicotine in freebase form
Nicotine strength 10–20 mg/ml Varies, also 0 mg/ml
Bottle 10 ml 10 ml
Common VG/PG 50/50 and 40/60 Varies between products

Shortfill or longfill?

Shortfill is nicotine‑free e‑juice in a larger bottle where part of the bottle’s capacity is left empty. Longfill consists of flavor concentrate in a larger bottle and is not a ready‑made e‑liquid. The amount of liquid and the bottle’s total volume vary and are stated in the product information.

Shortfill Longfill
Content Ready‑mixed e‑juice Flavor concentrate
Nicotine Nicotine‑free Nicotine‑free
The bottle Partially filled, e.g., 50 ml in 60 ml Partially filled
Mixing Space for a nicotine shot Diluted with base liquid

Nicotine shots, base liquid and flavor additives

For self‑mixing there are nicshots of 10 ml with 14 or 20 mg/ml nicotine, nicotine‑free base liquid in various VG/PG ratios, flavor additives for cooling, sweetness and acidity and mixing accessories such as bottles and syringes. A nicotine shot can be added to shortfill when the product’s instructions support it, and longfill is diluted with base liquid directly in the bottle, with or without a nicotine shot.

E-juice with and without nicotine

E-juice is available both with nicotine and as nicotine‑free alternatives. Nicotine strength is expressed in mg/ml, i.e., milligrams of nicotine per milliliter of liquid. According to the law on tobacco and similar products, e‑juice with nicotine is sold in bottles of up to 10 ml and with up to 20 mg/ml nicotine.

Nicotine can appear in different forms depending on the e‑liquid. If you want to know more about the differences you can read our guide about freebase, nicotine salt and hybrid nicotine. Always check the product information for the current nicotine strength and nicotine type.

What does PG and VG mean in e-juice?

PG (propylene glycol) and VG (vegetable glycerin) are two common base ingredients in e‑juice. The ratio between them is expressed as a PG/VG or VG/PG ratio, for example 50/50 or 70/30.

The ratio affects, among other things, the e‑liquid’s viscosity. Which ratio is suitable depends on which e‑cigarette, pod, tank and coil are used, so check the specifications for both the e‑juice and the device.

Flavors of e-juice

E-juice is available in a large number of flavor profiles and combinations. The range includes, among others, fruit, berries, menthol, tobacco, dessert, candy and beverage‑inspired flavors, and there are also e‑juices where several flavor profiles are combined.

Nicotine salt, 10 ml e‑juice and shortfill are also sorted by flavor, for example nicotine salt with fruit flavor, freebase with menthol flavor and shortfill with dessert flavor. Use the filtering in the product list to limit the range by flavor, brand and other attributes.

Which e-juice fits my vape?

Not all types of e‑juice are intended for all vape devices. Which e‑liquid fits your e‑cigarette depends, among other things, on the device’s construction, coil resistance, recommended power range and the e‑juice’s PG/VG ratio.

In the guide Can you use any e‑juice in your vape? we go through how, among other things, VG/PG, nicotine type and the device’s construction affect the choice of e‑liquid.

Check the specifications for both the e‑juice and your e‑cigarette before refilling, especially the PG/VG ratio and which coil is used.

Tips from our customer service

Why can the same e‑juice be experienced differently?

The same e‑juice can be experienced differently depending on which vape it is used in. Coil, power, airflow and the device’s construction affect how the e‑liquid vaporizes. Read more in the guide Why does the same e‑juice taste different in different vapes?

Storage of e-juice

E-juice should be stored according to the product’s instructions. Temperature can affect the e‑liquid’s viscosity and how it behaves in a vape. In the guide How does temperature affect your e‑juice? we go through how heat and cold can affect e‑juice, storage and use.

Store e‑juice out of reach of children, away from direct sunlight and high heat, and close the cap tightly when the bottle is not in use.
