What is a coil for vape and e-cigarettes?

A coil is the e-cigarette's heating element. In ready-to-use replacement coils the heating element sits together with a material that supplies e-liquid, often cotton. When the device is activated the e-liquid is heated and vaporized. A coil is therefore not a filter.

Coils are consumable parts. How they are installed and which part is replaced depends on the tank's or pod's construction.

Separate replacement coilThe coil is replaced according to the tank's or pod's instructionsVaporesso GTi, GTR and EUC
Pod with built-in coilThe entire pod is replaced when the coil is worn outVaporesso ECO ONE Pods

Coil series and compatibility with tanks and pods

Start with the model name of your tank or pod. Then check which coil series and variant the manufacturer specifies for that model. Two coils with the same resistance do not necessarily have the same fit. GTX, GTi, GTR and GT Core are different series.

The overview shows examples from the product information. For the GTX series the compatibility must be checked for the specific coil variant and device; not all GTX coils fit all devices that use GTX.

Resistance in ohms and power range in watts

The resistance is given in ohms (Ω). The manufacturer's power range is given in watts (W). Both specifications need to match the device's support and the selected coil. The resistance value alone does not determine either compatibility or which power should be used.

Example: three mesh coils with the same resistance

Coil variantResistanceStated power range
Vaporesso GTX 0,4 ohm Mesh0,4 Ω26–32 W
Vaporesso GTi 0,4 ohm Mesh0,4 Ω50–60 W
Vaporesso GTR 0,4 ohm Mesh0,4 Ω40–60 W

The table applies to the specified variants. Follow the labeling on the coil you use and the device's instructions.

Mesh, MTL and DTL

Mesh describes the heating element's mesh-shaped construction. MTL and DTL describe different draw styles. Those designations do not replace checking the coil series, resistance and power range.

When does a coil need to be replaced?

There is no replacement interval that applies to all coils. Lifespan is affected by e-liquid, power and usage patterns. A burnt or noticeably changed taste and reduced vapor production can be signs that the coil is worn out.

Also check liquid level, power setting and installation according to the product's instructions. Leakage or reduced vapor production can have other causes than a worn coil. When the coil no longer works as intended it is replaced, or the entire pod if the coil is built-in.

Installation and preparation of a new coil

Follow the instructions for your model. Some coils are screwed in, while others are pressed into place. A new coil needs time to absorb e-liquid before it is activated.

Example: coil replacement in Vaporesso GTX GO 40

The manufacturer's manual describes the following replacement for the GTX GO 40. The order and waiting time apply to this example.

  1. Remove the used coil Hold the pod with the mouthpiece downwards and pull out the coil according to the manual's illustration.
  2. Install the new coil Insert a compatible coil and press it in so that the base is level with the pod.
  3. Fill and close the pod Unscrew the top cap, fill through the filling opening and replace the cap.
  4. Wait before activation The manual specifies five minutes for the e-liquid to saturate the coil.

Glossary for coils and atomizers

Coil / atomizer
The heating element that vaporizes the e-liquid. A ready replacement coil also contains material for liquid delivery.
Ohm (Ω)
Unit of electrical resistance.
Watt (W)
Unit of power. The coil's specified power range should be followed.
Mesh
Mesh-shaped heating element.
MTL
Mouth to lung: the vapor is drawn first into the mouth and then to the lungs.
DTL
Direct to lung: the vapor is drawn directly to the lungs.
Priming
Preparation where the coil's absorbent material is saturated with e-liquid before activation.
