My E-cig Tank Is Leaking - What Should I Do?

Leaking e-cig tanks & clearomizers are one of the most common problems in the e-cig world, and there are usually simple solutions that can fix your leaking e-cig tank. We have all experienced liquid running out of the tank at some point, causing us to lose e-liquid that we could have vaporized instead. Don’t worry, it is a normal problem, and in this post we will list how you can fix a leaking tank and why the tank is leaking.

Why is my vape leaking?

There are several potential reasons why your vape is leaking. Here are some of the most common:

1. Incorrect filling: Do not fill your vape with too much e-liquid. Filling approximately half the tank is a good guideline.

2. Hard & intensive use: Using your vape carelessly without letting it rest between puffs can sometimes burn your coil and ultimately cause leaks.

3. Damaged seals: The seals in your vape can become damaged or worn over time, which can lead to leaks.

4. Incorrect coil: If you use a coil that is not compatible with your device or that has been subjected to wear, it can lead to leaks.

5. Changes in air pressure: If, for example, you are traveling by plane, changes in air pressure can cause your vape to leak e-liquid. This can also happen if you travel up a high mountain.

6. "Wrong" type of e-liquid: It is more common for leaks to occur when using a juice with a high PG content. This is because PG is a thinner liquid and can more easily pass through seals and other weak points in the device. VG, on the other hand, is thicker, which makes it less likely to leak.

7. High heat: High temperatures, which occur during use, can also lead to leaks. Be careful when it comes to the temperature of your vape.

Why is my Disposable vape leaking?

One of the best things about disposable vapes is that they are essentially completely leak-free. This is because the e-juice in disposable vapes is wrapped in a small textile and then wound around the device’s coil. This type of "wick" is optimal for avoiding leaks.

Despite this, you may experience leaks from your disposable vape. If this happens, we can give you one piece of advice: Puff more gently - A disposable vape is a small vape with tight airflow. If you puff too intensely, you can draw the e-liquid out of the "wick". It requires somewhat gentler handling than a traditional e-cig.

It also happens that disposable vapes are overfilled, especially cheaper versions. In such cases, e-liquid may have leaked out during transport, for example. This is nothing you need to worry about; simply let your disposable vape rest for a while before using it.

Pay attention to how you fill your e-cig tank

When filling your liquid container, be careful how you pour in the e-liquid. If you are new to electronic cigarettes, you may not have full knowledge of where to pour in the e-liquid (see image). Be careful to pour the e-liquid into the liquid container and not into the central "hole".

Example of how to fill your e-cig tank

Hold the tank at an angle so that the e-liquid runs along the glass, and make sure not to fill the entire liquid container. We usually recommend that our customers only fill the liquid container to 70 - 80%. The coil loves to bathe in flavorful e-liquid, but we recommend filling the container only to 70 - 80% to prevent the tank from becoming overfilled with liquid.

Leaving an air space creates a vacuum and keeps the e-liquid in place in the container. It is important to close the airflow before opening the top. When the pressure in the tank is released, it can move into the coil and liquid will follow (if the airflow is open). Therefore, you should close it before opening the top to avoid leaks.

If you have ever unscrewed your e-cig tank, you may have seen that there are o-rings (seals, rubber rings) that ensure no e-liquid escapes. Be careful when reassembling the tank so that the o-rings do not get pinched and become damaged.

If you have a damaged o-ring, your e-cig tank will leak and you will need to buy new o-rings for your liquid container.

Also be careful to tighten the threads in your e-cig tank properly after taking apart your liquid container. Do not tighten them with all your strength, but tighten the threads firmly.

A coil for the right e-liquid, e-liquid for the right coil

You can also consider what type of e-liquid you use, as well as which coil you use. There are countless different e-liquids and coils out there, and here we will provide tips on what type of e-liquid you should use with different types of coils (ohms).

If the coil cannot vaporize the e-liquid properly, the e-cig tank will become flooded and then the tank will leak. Therefore, it is important to choose the right e-liquid for your e-cig tank.

Coils with a higher resistance (above 1Ωohm) imitate the function of a regular tobacco cigarette and tend to have smaller airflow holes to make the "draw" tighter and provide an authentic cigarette-smoking experience.

For this type of coil and vaping, we recommend an e-liquid with a high PG % (50PG/50VG), as propylene glycol is more fluid and makes it easier for the coil to vaporize the e-liquid.

Coils with a low resistance (below 1Ωohm), also known as sub-ohm vaping, can vaporize thicker e-liquid, such as an e-liquid with 70VG/30PG. The higher the wattage you vape at, the better the vegetable glycerin in the e-liquid is vaporized. E-cig tanks in this category tend to have larger airflow holes, and we STRONGLY recommend that you close/lock the airflow to the e-cig tank when filling the liquid container with e-liquid, as it is common for these types of e-cig tanks to leak when the airflow is not closed.

NOTE! There are exceptions where a coil can be sub-ohm but very small, such as the eGo AIO 0.6ohm coil, where we preferably recommend using 50VG/50PG or 60VG/40PG e-liquids, as the coil is small and cannot vaporize thicker e-liquids such as VG70/PG30.

Solutions for a leaking e-cig tank

1. The coil can leak if it is worn out. If the cotton in the coil is worn out, the e-liquid will seep through. Fix this by replacing the coil. You can tell that it is time to replace the coil when you experience a "burnt" taste.
2. Check that the o-rings are not damaged.
3. Make sure that all parts of the e-cig tank are properly tightened.
4. Inhale more slowly and take smaller puffs so that the coil/tank has time to keep up. The harder you draw, the more liquid enters the coil, and it is easy for it to flood.
