How long does a vape last and how do you know when it is empty?
A vape needs to be charged when the battery is depleted, refilled or fitted with a new pod when the e-liquid has been used up, and fitted with a new coil when the heating element no longer works as it should. On a disposable device, these parts cannot always be replaced or recharged. Therefore, the time per battery charge, the consumption of liquid and the lifespan of the device itself must be kept separate.
A stated puff count describes a manufacturer's specification for a particular product, not a fixed number of days. No aerosol, weak flavour or a flashing indicator can be due to several things and does not alone show that the entire vape is used up. Aerosol is the small particles and droplets formed during use; it is often called vapour.
How long does a vape last?
If a device hypothetically provides 600 puffs and consumption is 100 puffs per day, the calculation is 600 ÷ 100 = 6 days. This is a calculation example, not recommended use or a guarantee of actual lifespan.
The e-liquid lasts until it has been used up. A rechargeable battery may still function afterwards, while a depleted device may have liquid remaining. The coil, which heats the liquid, may also need to be replaced before the liquid is gone. These are three different limitations.
- Non-rechargeable disposable vape: the entire device is used up when the battery can no longer power it or the liquid is gone.
- Rechargeable disposable vape: the battery can be charged, but the liquid cannot be refilled. Rechargeability therefore does not automatically mean refillability.
- Pre-filled pod system: a rechargeable battery is used with pre-filled, replaceable pods. An empty pod is replaced; the battery device is kept if it works.
- Refillable vape: liquid is added to a designated container. Depending on the design, the entire pod or a separate coil is replaced.

How many puffs does a vape have?
The manufacturer states up to 600 puffs for ELFBAR 600. The figure is a stated maximum for that model and does not mean that every user gets exactly 600 puffs. A puff count may refer to a device, a pod or several pods in a package; it is not automatically the number of puffs per battery charge.
Why does the puff count not always match?
Test conditions and actual use may differ. Blu, for example, states up to 1000 puffs per pod based on laboratory testing with one second per puff. A different puff duration therefore does not provide the same basis for comparison. ELFBAR does not state sufficient test conditions to calculate how many days the model lasts during actual use.
Puff duration, power, the coil's resistance and design, the battery's available energy and the amount of liquid affect the function and consumption. Regulated power means that the device controls the power to a specified value; other designs may provide power that changes with the battery's charge. How often the product is used affects how quickly the liquid is consumed in calendar days.
Why do some vapes last longer than others?
The capacity of the liquid reservoir limits the amount of liquid that can be consumed, while the battery capacity and energy consumption affect the time until the next charge. At higher power, more energy is delivered to the coil per second. Therefore, battery, liquid, power and puff duration need to be compared separately.
A small or large exterior is not enough to determine the operating time. A higher stated puff count also does not prove that the reservoir is larger, since the test conditions may differ. The coil's design and how the liquid reaches the heating element are additional factors; they do not provide a general number of days or weeks.
How do you know whether it is the battery, pod or e-liquid that is empty?
An empty reservoir shows that the liquid has been used up. A depleted battery needs to be charged if the device is rechargeable. An empty pre-filled pod needs to be replaced. Contact problems, a dry or damaged coil and a depleted battery can produce similar troubleshooting symptoms. Flashing, weak flavour or no aerosol can therefore have several causes.
| Symptom | Possible cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| No response when inhaling | Depleted battery, contact problem or fault in the device. | Only charge a device intended for charging, using compatible charging equipment. Do not open or modify a disposable device in an attempt to charge it. |
| The indicator flashes | Low charge, time limit or another signal from the electronics. | Flashing alone does not establish that the liquid is gone. In Vuse Pro's UK user guide, 5 white flashes mean low charge and 10 flashes mean that the battery needs charging: charge with compatible equipment. Three flashes when used for longer than 5 seconds indicate the time limit; stop inhaling. The codes apply only to the model in the guide. Stop using the device if there is a fault or damage. |
| No or less aerosol, even though the indicator responds | Depleted battery, empty liquid reservoir or a problem with the pod or coil. | Charge a rechargeable device if the battery is depleted. Replace an empty pre-filled pod; only refill reservoirs intended for refilling. Do not continue using a dry coil. |
| Weak or changed flavour | Lack of liquid or changed function of the pod or coil. | Weak flavour alone does not prove a lack of liquid. An empty pre-filled pod is replaced. A coil that produces a persistent unusual flavour is replaced with a compatible coil or pod. |
| Dry or burnt flavour | Liquid is not reaching the coil or the coil is damaged. | Stop using the device. An empty pre-filled pod is replaced; a used-up coil is replaced. Charging does not fix a dry or damaged coil. |
| Leakage | Problem with the pod, reservoir or seal. | Stop using a leaking or damaged pod. Replace the damaged part; charging does not solve leakage. |
| Restricted, uneven or changed draw | Blocked airflow or a problem in the pod or mouthpiece. | Stop using the device if there is a blockage or damage. Do not insert objects into the device and do not attempt to open a sealed disposable product. |
How do you know when a disposable vape or pod is empty?
An empty pre-filled pod is used up and replaced as a unit. A non-rechargeable disposable vape is used up when the battery or liquid is gone. On a rechargeable disposable model, however, a depleted battery does not necessarily mean that the liquid has been used up.
Weak flavour, less aerosol, flashing and a changed draw are troubleshooting symptoms rather than certain indications that the entire product is used up. A dry or burnt flavour is a reason to stop using it. Leakage and an uneven draw can occur even when liquid remains.
The difference between pre-filled and refillable pods is that a pre-filled pod is replaced when the liquid has been used up, while a refillable reservoir can be filled again if the pod and coil still work. Related product formats can be found under disposable vape and pre-filled pod kits.
What determines the lifespan of a rechargeable vape and a pre-filled pod?
A rechargeable device has both a usage time per charge and a total lifespan for the battery and electronics. A pre-filled pod has a separate limitation: the liquid may run out or the pod may need to be replaced even when the battery device works. A common number of months for batteries or days for pods therefore cannot be stated here.
Charging replenishes the battery's energy and does not replace used-up liquid. Battery ageing is affected by use, charging routines and temperature. Charging should be done with compatible equipment and under supervision. The function of the pod and coil is affected by liquid supply, power and use. Rechargeable models and their designs can be found in the starter kits category.
Can you get more puffs by using the vape differently?
Changing the puff duration or power changes consumption, but cannot guarantee more puffs or restore a used-up coil. A compatible pod, the specified wattage range and liquid that works with the design are needed for normal operation. The device should not be opened, tampered with or used with a dry coil in an attempt to extend its lifespan.
Frequently asked questions about how long a vape lasts
Here are brief answers about days, puff count, refilling and flashing signals. The difference between an empty battery and used-up liquid determines whether charging, refilling or replacing a part is relevant.
How long does a vape last in days?
The number of days is calculated as the number of puffs actually available divided by the number of puffs per day. The manufacturer's maximum count therefore does not guarantee a specific number of days.
How many puffs does a vape have?
The number applies to the model, pod or package described by the manufacturer. It does not automatically indicate how many puffs the battery provides on one charge.
How do you know when the vape is empty?
Used-up liquid or a used-up coil may require the pod or coil to be replaced. A depleted rechargeable battery needs to be charged. No aerosol or flashing alone does not show which part is causing the problem.
Can you refill a disposable vape?
A sealed disposable vape is not intended for refilling. The fact that the battery can be charged does not change this. Refilling applies to reservoirs or pods designed to be filled with e-liquid.
Why is my vape flashing?
Flashing may indicate low charge, a time limit or a fault. The meaning varies between models; the Vuse Pro example in the table applies only to the model in the cited UK guide.
Can a vape be empty even if the battery works?
Yes. The liquid may be used up or the coil may be damaged even though the battery powers the indicator. The fact that the light is on therefore does not mean that the pod is still working.
Can the battery run out before the e-liquid?
Yes. Vuse Pro's user guide states that the battery may need charging while liquid remains in the pod. On a non-rechargeable disposable device, the battery's charge cannot be restored through intended charging.
Things to remember
Charging, refilling and replacing the pod or coil address different causes. The battery provides energy, the liquid is consumed and the coil heats the liquid. Stop using the device in the event of a dry or burnt flavour, leakage or damage; a stated puff count does not indicate that a product can still be used.
