Disposable vapes - The new boom?

A disposable vape is an e-cigarette with pre-filled liquid that is not refilled. When the liquid runs out, the entire device is disposed of as electronic waste. A pod system instead has a battery section that is kept when the pod is replaced.

What is a disposable vape?

A disposable vape has the battery, heating element and e-liquid in the same device. It is used on several occasions, not just for a single puff. The liquid is already mixed, so no refilling or separate nicotine shot is needed.

On models with automatic activation, the heating element starts when you take a puff. There is then no start button. Charging and settings are separate features: the term disposable vape means that the liquid is not refilled, not that all models have the same battery or functions.

Flavour designations may, for example, refer to berries, fruit, pastries, sweets, menthol or tobacco. The designation describes the flavouring, not the product's health risk or nicotine strength.

What does MTL mean?

MTL stands for Mouth To Lung. It describes how the aerosol is first drawn into the mouth and then into the lungs, as opposed to being inhaled directly into the lungs. The aerosol is formed when the e-liquid is heated; it is not merely water vapour.

Can a disposable vape be charged?

There are both disposable models without charging and disposable models with a rechargeable battery. Charging does not refill the liquid and does not make a disposable model refillable.

Vooms Iris Mini can neither be charged nor refilled. The manufacturer states that it contains 2 ml of liquid and has a nicotine strength of 20 mg/ml, labelled as 2 percent. These details apply to Iris Mini, not to all models named Iris.

How much nicotine does a disposable e-cig contain?

Nicotine strength is stated in milligrams per millilitre of liquid, mg/ml. For nicotine liquid on the Swedish market, the highest permitted concentration is 20 mg/ml. This is an upper limit, not an indication that all disposable vapes contain the same strength. There are also nicotine-free products.

Concentration and liquid volume are different measurements. A device with 2 ml of liquid and 20 mg/ml contains a total of 40 mg of nicotine in the liquid. This is not the amount absorbed by the body during use. For nicotine products, the container of a disposable device may hold a maximum of 2 ml.

What is nicotine salt?

Nicotine salt, also called nic salt, is formed when nicotine is combined with an acid. Nicotine without such an additive is often called freebase. Both forms can be found in e-liquid, and the strength is still stated in mg/ml.

The salt form does not provide a fixed nicotine uptake or a particular sensation in the throat. The composition and concentration of the liquid, as well as the device's function, also play a role. Nicotine salt is therefore no guarantee of the same effect as a cigarette or of being able to quit smoking.

What is the difference between vaping and smoking?

When smoking, tobacco is burned. An e-cigarette instead heats liquid into an aerosol. The difference does not mean that e-cigarettes are risk-free: the aerosol may contain harmful substances, and nicotine is addictive. The Public Health Agency of Sweden describes risks to the heart, blood vessels and lungs, as well as the fact that research into long-term risks is ongoing.

What is the difference between a disposable pod and a disposable vape?

A disposable vape is replaced as a complete device. A replaceable disposable pod, on the other hand, is the liquid container in a pod system: the pod is replaced when the liquid runs out, while the rechargeable battery section is kept.

Pre-filled pods, also called prefilled pods, are supplied with liquid and are not intended to be refilled. Refillable pods are filled with e-liquid. A replaceable pod must have the correct connection for the battery section; pods from different systems are not automatically compatible.

What does 50VG/50PG mean?

50VG/50PG indicates equal parts vegetable glycerin, VG, and propylene glycol, PG, in the liquid base. VG is more viscous than PG. The mixing ratio says nothing about the nicotine strength.

50/50 is not a rule for all pods or all low-power devices. For example, Innokin states that Go-Z works with both 50VG/50PG and 70VG/30PG. The liquid supply and the construction of the heating element affect which mixture a device is intended for.

How does nicotine salt affect cost and consumption?

The cost is calculated based on the price and how many devices, pods or millilitres of liquid are consumed. Nicotine salt in itself does not show that a product will be cheaper or that less liquid will be used. A comparison must also distinguish between the cost of a complete disposable device and the cost of a pod or refill liquid for a battery section that is kept.

How should a used disposable vape be sorted?

Take the entire device to a recycling centre as electronic waste. It contains electronics and a battery and must not be put in household waste or in packaging collection. A recycling station for packaging is therefore not the same as a recycling centre.

A weakened flavour is not a reliable measure of how much liquid remains. A disposable model without charging is used up when the battery can no longer power it; a rechargeable disposable model is still used up when the liquid has run out.
