What is snus?

Snus is something special that has existed in the Nordic countries since the 18th century. At that time scented snus was very popular and used by the finest gentlemen in the country; snus was considered a luxury and every gentleman carried a fine snusbox with small masterpieces of gold or silver. A bit of interesting trivia is that Napoleon Bonaparte was an avid snus user.

Snus is a moist tobacco blend and can come in both forms: "loose snus" and "portion snus". The snus is placed under the lip and then the flavor is released and absorbed by the mucous membranes in the mouth.

What is snus made of?

Swedish snus is created from carefully selected tobacco varieties, flavors, salts, water and humectants; all ingredients required to make snus are approved food-grade substances and meet all requirements.

Swedish Match has carefully selected its tobacco for its snus; they have learned from long experience that the most suitable tobaccos to make snus from are Nicotiana Tabacum & Nicotiana Rustica — these tobaccos have different flavors and characteristics.

Flavoring agents are mixed into the snus to give it its taste; for example, bergamot oil is used in General snus while Göteborgs Rapé is created with lavender and juniper to give the snus its distinctive flavor.

Salt is an important part of snus; it has two roles and fulfils two functions: an important component of the taste experience and a preserving function. The water mixed into the snus keeps it fresh and moist; snus is also mixed with propylene glycol, which many users of electronic cigarettes are familiar with.

Swedish snus

The snus we use today was introduced in the early 19th century and was seen as an alternative to chewing tobacco, which at the time was a luxurious and expensive product while snus was cheaper to produce and buy. During the 19th century more and more snus manufacturers appeared who focused on producing snus; some of the well-known snus brands are Ettan, General and Göteborgs Prima Fint.

Loose snus is the original form of snus and each tin weighs roughly between 40 to 50 grams. The advantage of loose snus is that the user can decide the size of the portion; loose snus tends to have a higher nicotine content and delivers a stronger flavor than regular portion snus, which instead has a longer flavor release and can be convenient to use since you do not need to form the portion yourself but can simply place the pouches under the lip.
